limit and asymmetric are in fact both the work of st. petersburg-based producer evgeniy sergeev, who has been building up a library of contemporary d&b productions digitally and now makes the leap to vinyl with some of the strongest of his productions to date. stormy is aptly titled as it rips with ferocity through mangled breaks, rave stabs and hoovers aplenty and quarantine is a quintessential darkside jam with more of that tricksy drum programming. the b-side offers a little more respite with the sunkissed tones of transzendental and the soulful yet ruff mood of jazz is making a smart counterpoint to the heavier a side.

as an artist, o’sullivan has long since explored the juncture between hard-hitting, functional dance floor material and more lofty, conceptual work. from a purely structural standpoint, the artist’s return to avian bears all the hallmarks of previous output under the alias, utilising the same palette found on early ep’s for guy brewer’s label. stripped back and driven, the music marries caustic drum-machine polyrhythms with warping, pitch bent leads and characteristically atmospheric use of reverb. it’s a decidedly dance floor offering, but the music comes refracted through o’sullivan’s own lens, with plenty of elegant references to a career spent exploring much of the techno genre’s periphery, from noise to new wave. crushed vox bubble up from beneath wrought-iron percussion and the artist takes time to step away from high energy 4×4 workouts to explore more complex rhythmic structures and harsh, low tempo grooves.

odes of the kabatians is a collaborative project from emergent french producers pvnv and amandra, and with their inclusion on the silent season x series they bring a different mood from the consistent dubbed-out nature of many of the releases. varsovie i is a crisp and clear exercise in cyclical techno programming, while varsovie ii throws shades of light and dark into the melting pot to create an arresting modern techno workout. on the flipside varsovie iii takes a more murky turn towards intricate textures and rhythms and then -varkovie iv- blows things open with a broken beat and tender chords, while still retaining that tough production finish that gives the record its grit.

almost 10 years have passed since onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric chinoiseries lp. 32 hip-hop beats formed the sample-based project - dusty chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout – resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of music with his love for classic hip-hop production.
using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music.
the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, “pt.3” is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one.

zum einen sind da die verschwommenen, direkten songs von „never going home“ mit denen hazel english ihre erste aufmerksamkeit erlangte, zum anderen ist auf „just give in“ die blühende, kreative partnerschaft mit jackson philips (aka day wave) zu hören. die beiden trafen sich, als hazel in ihrer wahlheimat oakland in einem buchladen arbeitete und jackson, auf dem weg seinen synthesizer reparieren zu lassen, kurz vorbeischaute. die beiden kamen ins gespräch und beschlossen kurz darauf zusammen musik zu machen. eine zufallsbekanntschaft ohne die diese doppel-ep vermutlich nie zu stande gekommen wäre. jeder der songs hat eine zeitlose, sonnengeküsste Ästethik inne, die von hazels direktem stil und ihrer pop-sensibilität nochmals hervorgehoben wird. hochansteckender dream-pop trifft auf ehrliches songwriting. auf einem beach-pop-fundament aufbauend schafft es hazel english mit „just give in / never going home“ einen vibe zu erschaffen, der sich in jeder umgebung wohlfühlt.
